New Cumberland River Rescue founded in 1967 by a group of concerned, fisherman, fireman and boaters in response to a boating accident which claimed the life of a local fisherman. It was and continues to base it's foundation on a family based organization where we try to involve all the family in various functions. |
The organization was first located at 2nd Street and Maple Alley in a single car garage with a donated used bread truck and Rabena’s used cleaning delivery truck. There was one boat borrowed from Frank Zimmerman, a roofer, who lived on 8th Street and in 1968 the first boat was donated. The organization lost all it had in 1972 except one boat and two trucks. |
|
| Inspite of this set back and the fact the land that was donated by New Cumberland just off Front and Bridge Streets. was under approximately 15 feet of water and as the organization grew, the Borough reconsidered and gave land at the current location at 12th and Market Streets. | ![]() |
| The organization funds itself by fund raising letters, carnival, chicken barbeques, grants and Easter egg sales. | |
| The unit has provided not only water rescue though the years but safe boat operation training, first aid classes, CPR and a place for the youth to grow and learn the ways of safe boating via a junior organization and community programs such as the Halloween Parade and Carnival. | |
